Common questions

Parents

Do I go with my child to the tutoring session?

This is optional. All tutoring will take place in public locations.

Are services offered year-round?

Yes. Summer options for tutoring are available depending on tutor availability and scheduling.

IF your current tutor is unavailable, we will find you a fill-in for the summer, that way come fall, you can choose which tutor you would like to continue our services with.

What if I have multiple children in the same family that need tutoring?

We believe that no two children are alike, especially when it comes to siblings or relatives. Every child needs to have their own form filled out, as we do ask questions including learning styles which are common to differentiate between children. Each child will always receive one-on-one tutoring, as we do not want distractions or closed-mindsets during tutoring sessions. Feel free to email us at: VolunTutorsFL@gmail.com or click on the "Contact Us" page and type a response there.

Where do we meet?

Students and VolunTutors meet strictly in public spaces. Depending on location, I will email you with where you will meet for tutoring sessions. These places include but are not limited to schools after hours, libraries, public/neighborhood parks, and coffee shops.

How will I know who my tutor is?

Shortly after completing the student sign-up form, I will email you and share the name of your tutor, where you will meet, and a phone number you can contact that tutor on to discuss meeting times. IF you are not comfortable with that tutor at any time, please be sure to email me (preferably with an explanation, in case further action needs to be taken on my part) and we will take steps from there.

How long are the tutoring sessions?

They last approximately one hour, but may differ depending on tutor, student, parent, or scheduling in general.

Tutors

What do I need to qualify to join as a VolunTutor?

The following is required to join the program as a tutor:

-Minimum 3.0 Unweighted GPA (A/B’s in each class)

-Minimum One Teacher Recommendation in a Core Subject

-One Paragraph (5-7 sentences) explaining why you would like to join the program, your successes/accomplishments, and anything you have done (volunteer work, programs, examples of ways you have openly helped others, etc.) that would make you a good fit.

-Clean Disciplinary Record

-Good Attitude

What if my grades drop?

You are on probation from tutoring until your grades return to the 3.0 unweighted GPA. If we notice constant fluctuation in your school grades, we will take further steps to decide whether you can remain a member.

Phone Policy

VolunTutors are required to keep their phones on silent during all tutoring sessions and are prohibited from using their phones at all during the service (excluding emergency situations), this includes the use of AI to answer a question. However, exceptions include the one listed below.

IF a tutor does not understand a question?

IF a tutor does not understand/remember a question or how to solve a problem, they may -quickly- look it up on how to solve the particular question. It is important for tutors to look at the steps before the answer to better explain it to the student. IF a tutor does not understand a certain subject, we will take measures including switching them around to younger grades or a different subject entirely to make sure the student is getting the most possible from their tutoring experience.

Clothing Policy

Mirrors the St. Johns County School District Clothing Policy.

Please be sure to note that if a rule or policy is not followed, actions are required to take place immediately.
